Guidelines for Authors

The journal “Nachrichten des Entomologischen Vereins Apollo” (in short NEVA), Frankfurt am Main, is a journal for publication of scientific papers on entomology.scientific papers on all fields of systematic entomology, including phylogenetics, evolution, biogeography, and morphology. It covers research articles, rearing and expedition reports and other scientific matters, both from amateurs and professionals. NEVA publishes scientific contributions as well as “short communications” of different nature, and notifications by the association. Besides the scientific content, special consideration is given to high quality printing standards.

Exclusiveness, Copyright

Manuscripts submitted for publication in NEVA may not be published or submitted for publication in similar form and content elsewhere. The copyright of text and illustrations for the printed version will be transferred to Entomologischer Verein Apollo e.V., if not agreed differently and in writing before printing. The copyright of the original illustrations remains unaffected.

Editor's address

see Editorial Board

The Editorial Board reserves the right to return manuscripts that do not comply with the formats specified below, even without a detailed review, with a request for formal revision and resubmission. All authors are requested to inform themselves in more detail about the mentioned formatting requirements and standards based on a current issue of NEVA for compiling a manuscript.

Structure

Original papers should generally be structured as follows: Title > Author(s) > Address(es) > Abstract (English) > Zusammenfassung (German) > Introduction > main part (usually consisting of: Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion) > Acknowledgements > References.

Language, contents

Original papers can be written in English or German; abstracts can also be published in other languages. Contributions may deal with all aspects of entomology including rearing and field reports. All manuscripts submitted will be reviewed by the editorial board. The editorial team expressly reserves the right to an additional review by external — usually anonymous — reviewers. The editorial board decides about acceptance with or without revision.

Size, format and submittance

  1. Scientific contributions should comprise at least 2 or more printed pages (ca 4 manuscript pages). Short communications, entomological notes, and other small contributions are ½ and to 2 printed pages long.

  2. Manuscripts are to be submitted as electronic files. Submissions can preferably be made by email (as an attachment); larger manuscripts can also be provided via a download link (e.g., WeTransfer or HiDrive) or on USB storage devices

  3. Text files may be in all formats which can be opened or converted by MS WinWord; graphics and image files may be in all formats which can be opened by Adobe Photoshop (PSD, JPG, TIF, BMP etc.).

  4. The only allowed additional typographic format is Italics (for scientific species and genus names). All other text formatting, e.g., bold or CAPITALS or s p a c i n g must not be used.

  5. Dates: Months are represented in lowercase Roman numerals, days as numbers without leading zeros. After the period there is a space. Example: 4. vii. 2025, 24. xii. 2025

  6. The gender symbols ♂ or ♀ are either to be printed or may be coded as follows:

    • ♂: male, as UNICODE 2642, UTF-8: E2 99 82, or “#m

    • ♀: female, as UNICODE 2640, UTF-8: E2 99 80, or “#w

Illustrations

  1. All illustrations should be submitted in digital form and printing quality, compatible with the programs used by the editors (see above).

  2. All figure legends are not to combined with the image/graphic files, but need to be placed consecutively numbered at the end of the text file.

  3. All illustrations should be submitted as separate image files, not embedded into the text file. Mounted MS-PowerPoint or PDF files cannot be accepted.

  4. We use a printing format of 18 cm x 26 cm (width x height) for a full page; single column width is 8.75 cm. Illustrations in landscape format will be reduced to a maximum of 18 cm width and printed upright. The minimum resolution for colour or greyscale images is 305 dpi (120 pixel/cm) and for line drawings 1200 dpi scaled to the final printing size.

Descriptions of new taxa, taxonomy

For all taxonomic works the current rules and provisions of the ICZN  fully apply. Holotypes are to be deposited in a public museum collection.

Newly described taxa are indicated with “sp. n.”, “ssp. n.”, or “gen. n.” and must, like nomenclatural changes, be mentioned in the abstract and Zusammenfassung. Species names are to be stated with the full genus name at first instance in the text; later on, the genus name can be abbreviated, provided the context remains clear. Family group names (superfamilies, tribes) are not to be written in italics. The placement of the treated taxon in the system should preferably be indicated in the title or at the first mention in the text, e.g., (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae).

References

All publications cited in the text are to be included in a references section at the end of the paper. The form of the citation has to follow the following format (especially the punctuation):
Firstauthor, I. I., & Secondauthor, I. I. (year): Full title of the publication. — Full name of journal, volume: firstpage–lastpage.

All publications listed in the references section must be cited within the text in the form (Firstauthor & Secondauthor year).

Offprints

All authors receive a PDF file of their contribution free of charge. This PDF file may be used by the authors only for private exchange with colleagues, and for supplying it on special request. Providing free online-access to this file (e.g., on a homepage) is not allowed without explicit written permission by the editor. Commercial sale is prohibited. Printed offprints are available on demand, the costs must be requested by the author prior to printing.
